Youth Baseball Uniform Sizing: A Guide for Parents

Measure chest for the jersey and waist plus inseam for the pants, then size up one if your child is between sizes. Here is the full method.

Youth Baseball Uniform Sizing: A Guide for Parents

To size a youth baseball uniform, measure your child's chest for the jersey and waist plus inseam for the pants, then compare each with the size chart. If a measurement falls between two sizes, choose the larger one, because kids grow during a season and baseball jerseys are worn over undershirts.

Getting it right the first time matters more than most parents think. A team order is placed once for the whole roster, so one wrong size means a reorder and a player in a borrowed jersey on opening day.

How do you measure a child for a baseball jersey?

Measure around the fullest part of the chest, under the arms, with the tape level and snug but not tight.

Have your child stand relaxed in a thin T-shirt. Arms should hang at the sides. Write the number down in inches; do not round down.

Then check body length: from the top of the shoulder, next to the collar, down to where the jersey should end. Baseball jerseys are tucked in, so they need to be long enough to stay tucked when a player reaches for a ball.

How do you measure for baseball pants?

Pants need two numbers: waist and inseam.

  • Waist: measure around the natural waist, where the belt sits, with the tape level.
  • Inseam: measure from the crotch to the ankle bone for full-length pants. For knickers, the pants end below the knee, so inseam matters less, but the waist still decides the size.

Pants and jerseys are sized separately. A child who wears a youth medium jersey can easily need large pants, and the other way round.

What do youth sizes mean in inches?

Youth sizes are a guide, not a rule. Always compare your child's measurements with the chart on our size guide, which lists exact inches for every size.

Youth sizeTypical age rangeNotes
YXS4–6Coach-pitch and T-ball
YS6–8Most 8U players
YM8–10Common for 10U
YL10–12Common for 12U
YXL12–14Many 13U and 14U players
Adult S and up13+Taller teens and high school

Ages are only a starting point. Two 10-year-olds can be three sizes apart.

Should you size up for growth?

Size up one if your child is between sizes or in a growth spurt. Do not size up two.

A jersey that is too big looks sloppy, comes untucked and can catch a glove. Pants that are too long bunch at the ankle and wear through at the heel. One size up gives a full season of growth without those problems.

What mistakes do parents make with sizes?

These come up every season:

  1. Using T-shirt size. Baseball jerseys are worn over an undershirt and cut differently.
  2. Guessing from age. Measure instead.
  3. Measuring over a hoodie. Use a thin T-shirt.
  4. Forgetting the pants. Waist and inseam are separate from the jersey.
  5. Missing the deadline. The team order cannot wait for one late reply.

How do sizes get collected for a team order?

The coach or team parent collects one list with every player's sizes, name and number, then sends it with the order.

Use this checklist when you reply:

  • Jersey size (from chest measurement)
  • Pants size (from waist and inseam)
  • Name for the back, spelled exactly as it should appear
  • Number, plus a second choice
  • Undershirt or sock size if the team is ordering them

FAQ

What size baseball jersey does a 10-year-old wear?

Many 10-year-olds wear YM or YL, but measure the chest and compare with the chart rather than going by age.

Should youth baseball pants fit tight?

Pants should fit at the waist with a belt and allow a full squat. They should not be so loose that they bunch at the knees.

Can my child wear adult sizes on a youth team?

Yes. Youth and adult sizes can be mixed in one team order, all in the same design.

What if the uniform does not fit when it arrives?

Order a single replacement from the design on file with no minimum. If the wrong size was our mistake, report it within 14 days and we remake it free.
