Button-Front vs Pullover Baseball Jerseys: How to Choose

Button-front jerseys give the classic, polished look; pullovers are simpler, lighter and easier for younger players. Here is how to choose.

Button-Front vs Pullover Baseball Jerseys: Which Should Your Team Choose?

Choose button-front baseball jerseys for the classic, polished look that high school and travel teams usually want, and pullover jerseys (crew neck or two-button) when you want something simpler, lighter and easier for younger players to put on. Both can carry the same colors, names, numbers and logos.

The choice affects how the team looks in photos, how fast young players get dressed, and how the jersey holds up after a season of washing.

What is the difference between button-front and pullover jerseys?

A button-front jersey opens all the way down the front like a shirt. A pullover has no full opening and goes on over the head.

Which style looks better in photos?

Button-fronts photograph as "real baseball" because they match what players see at higher levels. The placket and piping frame the chest and give the jersey structure.

Pullovers look cleaner and more modern. Because there is no placket down the middle, a large chest logo or a full sublimated pattern runs across the front without a break.

Which is more comfortable to play in?

Pullovers are usually a little more comfortable because there is no placket or buttons on the chest. Players who dive or slide a lot sometimes prefer them.

Button-fronts made from a light fabric are comfortable too. Fabric weight affects comfort more than style; see our jersey fabric weight guide for which weight suits hot summer tournaments.

How do sublimated designs work on each style?

On a sublimated jersey, the design is printed into the fabric itself, so colors and patterns do not crack or peel. Both styles can be fully sublimated.

Loading printed fabric into the heat press. Heat transfers the design into the fibers, which is why sublimated jerseys keep their colors wash after wash.

The difference is layout. On a button-front, our designers place the team name so the placket does not split a letter, and keep the front number to one side. On a pullover, the front is one continuous panel, so script names and large graphics fit easily.

Which style lasts longer?

Both last a full season and more with proper care. Buttons are the only extra part to look after on a button-front: check them after washing, and close them before the jersey goes in the machine so the placket keeps its shape.

How do teams usually decide?

  • 8U to 10U and rec leagues: pullovers. Quick to put on and simple.
  • 12U+ travel teams: button-fronts for games, often with a pullover or batting-practice top for warmups.
  • High school: button-fronts, usually matching the school's traditional look.

Whichever you choose, pair it with matching baseball pants.
