Football Jersey Sizing: How to Fit Jerseys Over Pads

Football jerseys must fit over pads. Here is how to size them correctly.

Football Jersey Sizing: How to Fit Jerseys Over Pads

Football jerseys are unlike almost any other team jersey: they are designed to be worn over shoulder pads. A jersey that looks fine on a hanger can be far too tight once pads go on, or so loose that it flaps and gives opponents something to grab. Getting sizing right avoids both problems.

This guide explains how football jerseys should fit, how to measure, and how sizing differs for tackle, flag and 7v7.

How a tackle football jersey should fit

  • Over the pads, snug but not strained. The jersey should cover the pads completely without seams pulling.
  • Shoulders and chest with room for pads. Football jerseys are cut wider in the shoulders and chest than ordinary shirts.
  • Long enough to tuck in. A jersey that untucks during a play looks sloppy and can be grabbed.
  • Sleeves that cover the pad caps without restricting the arms.

The most important rule: measure with pads

Shoulder pads vary a lot in size by position and age. A lineman's pads are much bulkier than a receiver's. The best method is:

  1. Have players try sample jerseys with their pads on.
  2. If that is not possible, measure the width of the pads across the shoulders and compare with the size chart.
  3. Note the player's position: linemen often need a size larger than skill players of the same build.

Youth football sizing tips

  • Youth players grow quickly over a season. If between sizes, choose the larger.
  • Youth pads often sit high; check that the jersey is long enough to tuck in.
  • Order a few spare jerseys in common sizes for players who join late or outgrow theirs.

Pants

Football pants are sized by waist and must fit over hip, thigh and knee pads (integrated or slotted). Check:

  • Waist and length with pads in.
  • Belt loops or built-in belt systems.
  • Matching color and stripes with the jersey design.

Flag football and 7v7: a different fit

Without pads, flag and 7v7 jerseys follow different rules:

  • Fitted cuts look sharper and do not flap.
  • In flag football, jerseys must not cover flags, so length matters. Many programs choose shorter or tucked styles.
  • Size true to fit, not up.

Girls' flag football programs should choose cuts made for female athletes.

Numbers and readability

Football numbers must be large and readable for officials. High school and many youth leagues set minimum sizes for front and back numbers. Check your rulebook before finalizing the design. Sleeve or shoulder numbers are common too.

Common sizing mistakes

  • Sizing from T-shirt size. Football jerseys are cut differently.
  • Forgetting position differences. Linemen and skill players can need different sizes.
  • Ordering exact sizes for growing players in a long season.
  • Ignoring length. Short jerseys untuck.

When to order fall football uniforms

Most programs order between February and June so uniforms arrive before summer camps. Production takes 10–12 working days after you approve the design, plus delivery.
